KWILA PATIO FURNITURE
What type of furniture is Kwila?
KWILA (also called Merbau) is a tropical hardwood that is found throughout South
East Asia, and is the material of choice for outdoor furniture in Australia
and New Zealand. Kwila is a straight-grained wood with a dark brown color similar
to walnut. Kwila has a hardness factor of 8.6 making it one of the strongest
and most durable outdoor timbers in the world. The high oil content of Kwila
wood makes it weather resistant and pest resistant while its high density and
hardness make it perfect for garden furniture.
Where does it come from?
This furniture is made in Central Java, Indonesia, and the timber is from Kalimantan,
Indonesia. Our manufacturer only uses timber purchased in accordance with the
Indonesian National Policy of Forestry Management, and under the guidelines
of the International Tropical Timber Council.
Does Kwila wood function well as garden furniture?
In the past Kwila was used for marine applications such as marine piers, boat
building, bridge building and mine shoring as well as structural applications
such as decking, building structures, sleepers and flooring. The advent of modern
woodworking machinery has made it possible to manufacture furniture out of this
very hard hardwood. The dark brown color of this strait grained wood gives Kwila
furniture a beautiful appearance, while the high resin content and extreme density
(about 30 percent heavier than oak) provide the strength and weather resistance
necessary for outdoor use. This is why Kwila is the new kid in the garden furniture
neighborhood, and quickly becoming a favorite for garden furniture. |

CARE AND MAINTENANCE
OF KWILA GARDEN FURNITURE
MATERIAL
Kwila (or Merbau) is a tropical resinous hardwood with a hardness factor of
8.6 making it one of the strongest and most durable outdoor timbers in the world.
KILNING
Prior to manufacture, the timber is washed and kiln dried at very high temperatures.
This is done for two reasons: 1) To stabilize the structure of the timber, and,
2) To eradicate any infestation. In the forest, many creatures live on and within
the trees. Some moisture is retained to prevent excessive cracking to the surface.
EXPOSURE TO THE ELEMENTS
Once you have sited your furniture outdoors, the timber will normally dry out
very rapidly. Minor surface cracks may appear and this is quite normal and will
not affect the long-term integrity of the timber.
BLEEDING
Kwila’s natural oil will cause the furniture to leach or bleed an excess dark
red/brown sap when first exposed to rain, heavy dew, or high humidity. As the
nature of each piece of timber is different, the bleeding period, though short,
is unpredictable in length. A thorough hose down of the furniture on a grassed
area or leaving it outdoors during heavy rainfall will assist in flushing away
the excess sap thus hastening the process.
THIS PROCESS IS IMPORTANT TO PREVENT STAINING OF CLOGHES OR PATIO AREAS.
After bleeding is complete the natural oil in the wood acts as inherent preservative
to prevent the timber from shrinking or excessive cracking or splitting.
MAINTENANCE AND PROTECTION
Left untreated, Kwila products will become silvery gray in color and this often
is the desired effect. However, if you wish to retain the original coloration,
you must treat the product with a suitable oil at least once a year. Ideally,
the first treatment should be within 4 weeks of purchase. For best results,
lightly sand the surface to remove any staining or grime leftover from the manufacturing
process, wipe off any dust and apply the oil with a brush or cloth. Ensure that
your patio or lawn is suitably protected and that you follow any additional
instructions for the treatment you use. A mixture of 50% boiled linseed oil
and 50% mineral spirits works nicely on this timber or a commercial clear decking
oil will suffice, however, as climatic conditions and positioning of the product
(in the shade vs. in full sun) may vary.
For folding furniture, occasional tightening of the
brass fittings is recommended, depending upon amount of usage.

TEAK PATIO FURNITURE
What type of timber is Teak, and where does it come
from? Teak is a honey-brown colored tropical hardwood that is found in Southeast
Asia. There are several look-alikes out there, but the real thing comes only
from Southeast Asia. (This is the real thing) Because teak grows in the tropics,
it naturally creates a resin that resists insects and excess moisture. The natural
resin stays in the wood through the drying and working processes and is the
central quality of this wood.
All timber used in the manufacture of our garden furniture is plantation-grown,
and is acquired through the Indonesian Forestry (Perum Perhutani), and is grown
in accordance with the Government of Indonesia Reforestation Sustained Yield
Program.

Dutch traders operating in the East Indies (Indonesia and Malaysia) discovered
the great qualities of teak when they used the timber for replacement parts
in their ships. The teak parts outlasted all the other materials on their ships
and proved to be more durable than any other wood. Teak wood has been used for
boat building, outdoor/indoor furniture construction and other high stress uses
ever since.
Is Teak furniture by Java Wood, Inc. for the indoors
or outdoors?
While all of our products are designed for outdoor use, many of them work just
as well indoors. Patios, balconies, dens, dry bars, porches and kitchens are
all great homes for this furniture. For many generations Teak has been used
for boat building, flooring, decking, marine jetties, mine timber and staircases.
The abundant natural oil in Teak is the feature of this timber that makes it
so durable in comparison to other timbers commonly used for outdoor furniture.
Add to this high quality construction methods and brass fastenings and you have
a finished product perfect for indoor and outdoor situations.
CARE OF TEAK PATIO
FURNITURE
Opinions vary on this
topic of caring for teak patio furniture. Our manufacturer recommends leaving
the furniture in the natural form and cleaning periodically with a quality oil
soap and water. Over time, the furniture will season to a silver-gray color.
A light sanding every few years will bring the wood surface to a new appearance.
A variety of products are on the market for application
to teak patio furniture. We do not recommend using any products that create
a hard finish on the furniture, as it would likely peal in time. Oil based sealers
would be more adequate, and there are some that contain ultra violate light
protection. If you decide to use a sealer on your furniture, be sure to follow
the manufacturers instructions on the container.
While this furniture is able to withstand the most
extreme weather conditions, the maximum life can be derived by storing away
or covering the furniture in the off season. Periodically tightening the hardware
of the folding furniture and cleaning are also recommended to derive the best
use and longest life from this fine teak furniture.
Limited 5-Year Warranty

abuse, or normal wear. If you experience a problem with any Java Wood, Inc.

Damaged Shipments:
It is the customer’s responsibility to note any damage or shortages
found on the carrier’s bill of lading. The carrier assumes
responsibility for safe delivery of goods. Failure to adequately note
on the Bill of Lading any external evidence of damage or loss may
result in the carrier refusing to honor the claim. We recommend that
you write “subject to inspection” when you sign the delivery receipt.
This indicates that you will promptly open and inspect the package
after the driver has left, and provides recourse in the case of hidden
damage. We will assist the customer in settling claims with the
carrier, but are not responsible for damage in transit.
Claims: All
claims which are the result of loss or shortage must be made within
three days after receipt of goods. If you find concealed damage, which
is not apparent until the merchandise has been unpacked, a written
request for inspection to the carrier must be made within seven days of
delivery. A claim must then be filed with the carrier since such damage
is the carrier’s responsibility.
Returns:
Java Wood, Inc. has a 30-day return policy from the date of purchase.
Returns are not accepted without our prior authorization. The customer
is responsible for all freight charges except in the case of defective
merchandise in which case Java Wood, Inc. will pay all freight charges.
It is the responsibility of the customer to properly repackage the
merchandise to ensure its safe return in new condition.
Assembly:
Most of our furniture is shipped in knockdown form and is packaged
carefully with clear instructions and all of the applicable hardware.
The tenon and mortis items require the insertion of wood dowels along
with a dab of glue (provided in the packaging). The dowels are best
inserted with a rubber or wood mallet. Some of our other pieces require
fittings and/or screws. Fittings should not be overly tightened. Anyone
with at least basic mechanical ability will find assembly simple, maybe
even enjoyable.
Delivery:
Due to the substantial weight of our furniture, Java Wood, Inc. uses
mostly common carrier for delivery to our customers. For some of the
lighter folding pieces we use UPS or FedEx. Because of our central
location in Denver, Colorado, we are able to ship to you quickly and
efficiently regardless of the order size.
